Cirdan Sailing Trust

Our relationship with AU

As an AU provider we would like to spread the word of our service to ensure groups are aware of the fantastic experience we provide aboard our sailing vessels and how our Voyage of Discovery Fund can offer grants to help cover some of the costs.

Overview of our organisation and the services we offer

The Cirdan Sailing Trust is a registered charity established in 1983 to provide young people, in particular those who are disadvantaged, with the opportunity to develop life skills through the challenge and adventure of a residential at sea aboard large sailing vessels. We also provide youth leaders/teachers with a platform upon which they can enhance their existing programmes of work with the young people in their care. We are also an approved Duke of Edinburgh activity provider and offer Gold Residential voyages for individuals.

Our fleet consists of three traditional vessels each varying in size with its own individual character. We can accommodate groups of up to 16 people (including leaders) and sail from Ipswich, Harwich and further afield. We are able to tailor the voyages to the groups' specific needs. RYA accreditation at various levels can be gained.

We also operate the Voyage of Discovery Fund which provides financial assistance towards the voyage fee for groups unable to cover the full cost.

The sort of activities we offer

The young people come aboard in a group for a self-catered residential with their youth leaders/teachers where they live and work alongside our professional crew. They are involved in all aspects of running and sailing the vessel, both above and below deck, they face challenges, have to overcome adversity, follow rules and work as a team. The unique opportunity of being at sea, within the confines of a boat, creates an atmosphere that helps improve communication, self-confidence, self-esteem, self-discipline, and team spirit. All this is done whilst having fun and learning valuable life skills.

Why you should choose us!

The Cirdan Sailing Trust has been operating for over 30 years, during which time we have taken around 32,000 young people to sea and provided them with a life changing experience. Our crew are professional sea staff, fully qualified to operate the vessels, are DBS cleared and exprienced in working with young people from a range of organisations.

The sailing vessels we operate are maintained to a very high safety standard as required by our licensing authority and Maritime Coastguard Agency. We are fully insured and have risk assessments and appropriate operating policies in place. We tailor our voyages to suit the needs of the groups that come on board and have three very different vessels to accomodate different size and type of groups; they sail from the East Coast and around the UK.

Feedback from our youth leaders and the young people who have taken part in our voyages confirms that we operate from a high standard and offer a positive activity that hekps young people develop essential life skills.

How the activity is supported:

All our vessels are operated by appropriately qualified DBS cleared and experienced staff. They may on occasions be supported by volunteers.

We do require that youth groups are accompanied by leaders/teachers/carers.

Ratio of staff to children:

Dependent on the groups needs.

Staff are trained to assist in the following:

  • Managing challenging behaviour
  • Disability awareness

Support statement:

Most voyages require youth leaders/teachers to accompany young people.

Other specialist equipment available: Users should be aware that we operate large sailing vessels which unfortunately are not suitable for wheelchair users or people with very restricted mobility or co-ordination.
